Harrisburg, State Capitol

The Capitol Building is a National Historic Landmark.  If you go, make sure that you visit the Sentate Chamber, the House Chamber, and the inside dome.  While in Harrisburg, you can also visit the National Civil War Museum, the State Museum of Pennsylvania, and catch a display or IMAX show at the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts. 

Hershey

There are a variety of things to see and do in Hershey – Chocolatetown, USA.  Hersheypark is open during weekends through most of September.  You can also tour Hershey’s Chocolate World to see how chocolate is made, visit Hershey Gardens, or see the animals at ZooAmerica.. 

Amish Country

Lancaster County, about 30 minutes from York, is home to the Pennsylvania Dutch.  For more about the Amish, and other sights to see in Lancaster County, click here.

Gettysburg

The Battle of Gettysburg was the battle with the largest number of casualties in the Civil War, and is frequently cited as the war’s turning point.  Today, you can tour the battlefield, visit the American Civil War Museum, and shop in the quaint stores in downtown Gettysburg.  For more information, click here.

York

In York, you can visit a a replica of the Colonial Courthouse, where the Articles of Confederation were drafted while the Second Continental Congress took refuge in York (prompting York to claim to be the first capitol of the United States).  If you like motorcycles, you can also take a tour of the Harley-Davidson plant, the largest Harley-Davidson manufacturing facility in the world, employing roughly half the company’s production workforce.   Other activities in the York and Lancaster region can be found here.
